I’ll never forget the day of January 6th, 2007, as it literally changed the rest of my life. This was the day that my college career ended off of an ACL tear. Every single day at some point, I replay that same moment, over and over again in my mind. I drive left, the defender cuts me off, and SNAP, I feel an immediate pop. It happened so fast, that to this very day, I’m still confused as to how and why it happened. Obviously, I was devastated beyond belief, but what made things worse was that I never got any closure on my career. I was a senior who was on par to shattering school records in 3 pointers made in both a single season AND all time, yet it all went away within seconds.
January 6th, 2017 marked the 10 year anniversary since that day. It’s taken me a long time to adjust to life afterwards. I’m sure many of you can relate to my story. You get used to life being a certain way, then BAM, something happens to where unexpected changes occurs. It can be easy to begin to feel pity for yourself, but be careful, as pity correlates to laziness. Pity allows us to excuse ourselves from striving to reach new levels.
A good lesson that I’ve learned recently is one from the bible. When Jesus roamed the earth, he told his disciples to go around and spread the gospel. Those who chose to accept the teachings, were blessed. For those who didn’t, Jesus would tell his disciples to “shake the dust from their feet”, and keep it moving. In other words, if something doesn’t go as planned, shake yourself off and keep pushing. This way of thinking has really helped me get through difficult times in my life, so I’m sure it will help you as well.
To wrap it up, just remember that unexpected occurrences are bound to happen. When they do, shake the dust from your feet, stand tall, and move on with your life!
